What got you out running/walking for the first time?
I’ve always been athletic. Took up running initially in 1983 to run WSER. First marathon, CIM 1984. Switched to Bicycle racing in 1986. Back to running in 2000.
What’s a song that helps pick up your pace?
Don’t listen to it, prefer the sounds around me, especially when in nature. Occasionally I might start signing if a song pops into my head.
What is the race medal you are most proud of and why?
The finisher’s buckle for the Euchre Bar Massacre 25-miler. A Barkley-esque race that was 25 (28) miles with 12,000ft of vertical gain, mostly off trail. The buckle is a random buckle cut from thrift store belts.Response
What is your dream race or location for a run?
I started this journey with the goal of running no more than 3years and a WSER finish, then back to bike racing. 20+ years later, 3 attempts, no finishes, but lots of fun. I kind of would still like a finish at States.
What is your favorite trail to run?
Anything in the mountains with steep climbs that you have to use your hands/arms.
What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you or that you have seen on the trail?
During my first Ultra (Firetrails 50), one of the future elite women in this sport, squatted in the middle of the trail right after she passed me, did her business and took off running.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not running?
Is there anything else? Really, I love coaching other runners, cooking, hiking, working outside, sleeping, educating myself (in anything).
Who are your running heroes? Who inspires you?
Never really had sports heroes. Sure there are athletes I like and follow, but not sure if they’re really hero status. I’m inspired by those who get out and try and aren’t afraid to try and overcome their fears regardless of their personal results. I hate the word “fail/failure” so I won’t use it.
Describe the moment you realized you were a “runner”.
Since I’ve always been athletic and active, It never really came to a specific moment of being a runner. More of an evolution. And I’m still evolving.
What are your goals?
ResponsTo be able to run into my golden years. Specific finishing goal, top 100 at The Dipsea by 2022, top 35 soon after. Top 35 runners get the coveted Black Shirt with your finishing place emblazoned on the back. It would be cool to have one of those (and a States buckle). I don’t think there are many people that have both. e
What’s your favorite beer (or other drink if you don’t drink beer)?
Blind Pig and Happy Hops are current favorites. I’m kind of addicted to Kombuchas too, GTs and Brew Dr.
