What got you out running/walking for the first time?
When my wife Julia joined ShadowChase in 2010 she was gone running all the time. She ran her first Half Marathon & I thought she was crazy! Then she signed up again & again for every race out there. I was getting lonely so I decided to join SCTT and see what this ‘running thing’ was all about! That was in 2011 and I’ve been running ever since.
What’s a song that helps pick up your pace?
‘Push It’ by Salt-N-Pepa! Never fails!!
What is the race medal you are most proud of and why?
Love them all but if I had to pick one it would be the 2015 Modesto Marathon. It was my first Marathon and the first with my brother Roland. The medal was huge with a large ‘V’ in the center. The city slogan was printed around the edge and ‘WEALTH’ was misspelled. I smile every time I look at it.😊
What is your dream race or location for a run?
I would love to run a big city race like the New York Marathon or the Chicago Marathon. Definitely a Runcation!
What is your favorite trail to run?
French Trail/Redwood Park/Lake Chabot hands down! Beautiful & challenging!!
What’s your favorite race distance?
Half Marathon! Depending on the course it could take me 4+ hours to finish! Anything longer than that is just not fun!!
What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you or that you have seen on the trail?
During my one and only Skyline 50K I was struggling along at mile 24/25. It was hot and was on the exposed fire trails. I saw a bicycle on the ground ahead. (I was seriously thinking of picking it up riding for a few miles!) As I got closer I saw legs sticking out from the tall grass. It was an Oakland P. D. Officer in his cycling uniform! He was just laying in the grass. I thought he had crashed and might be injured. He looked up at me and asked if I was ok! He then called out my bib number on his radio and waved me on. I just started laughing as I took off down the trail. I really wanted that bike!!🤣
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not running?
I’m enjoying cycling more & more. I really enjoy spending time my grandkids. But some days I enjoy not doing anything at all!!🤣
Who are your running heroes? Who inspires you?
Every week it’s someone different. So many heroes in our running community. Amazing people running in some amazing races in amazing locations. You’re all heroes to me! I’m always inspired by first timers. First time training & finishing a race. First time at a new distance. I’m inspired by seeing people do something they’ve never done before.
Describe the moment you realized you were a “runner”.
When I knew more about running shoes by trial and error than the average runner!!🤣
What are your goals?
Short term: Peace Officers Memorial Half in October. My 4th CIM (11th Marathon) this December. Long term: 100 mile bicycle tour down the coast.
What’s your favorite beer (or other drink if you don’t drink beer)?
Dust Bowl Therapist.
