Gus Wagner

What got you out running/walking for the first time?
I started running in early 2002. I had gone on a diet and thought it would help lose some pounds. I ended up getting hooked.

What’s a song that helps pick up your pace?
I don’t listen to anything when I run. I like hearing my footsteps, and the environment.  The quieter the better.

What is the race medal you are most proud of and why?
Beer Mile Ultra belt buckle. I was gonna back out, because I was scared of running it. I got over my fear, and ran it. Conquer fears!

What is your dream race or location for a run?
My dream race is a 15 miler in early spring, with wheat fields, hills, and ocean air.

What is your favorite trail to run?
Virginia Corridor

What’s your favorite race distance?
Half Marathon

What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you or that you have seen on the trail?
It’s not funny, but I was running the Corridor and came upon a small grass fire. I called the fire department, by the time they got there, it was pretty big. I watched them put it out then finished my run.

What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t running?
I like to garden, and I read a ton.

Who are your running heroes? Who inspires you?
Team Hoyt, anyone that pushes a running chair. Jesse Owens, Kathrine Switzer, anyone who goes for it. A lot of DB members too.

Describe the moment you realized you were a “runner”.
When people I didn’t know started talking to me about running.

What are your goals?
To run faster and farther. I really want to start running ultras. I want to be in a place where I can run the Grand Canyon R2R2R.

What’s your favorite beer?
I love Czech Pilsners and Russian Imperial Stouts, but I drink a lot of Pabst Blue Ribbon.
