What got you out running/walking for the first time?

I’ve enjoyed hiking my entire life but I was never much of a runner other than a handful of 5k road races. At some point, I started thinking that it might be fun to run the trails I was hiking…I didn’t realize that trail running was a thing. At first, I used an app called “Zombies Run” to build my running fitness which I found really helpful.

What’s a song that helps pick up your pace?

Anything by Bad Religion and “ROAR” by Katy Perry.

What is the race medal you are most proud of and why?

I’m not that into medals but I’m probably most proud of the finisher’s award for the 2017 Ohlone 50k. It was my slowest 50k and things generally didn’t go well…but I didn’t give up!

What is your dream race or location for a run?

I’d love to do a race in Hawaii, Bryce, or Zion.

What is your favorite trail to run?

It’s a tie; I love the Skyline-to-the-Sea trail and any trail in Yosemite.

What’s your favorite race distance?

Probably the half marathon.

What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you or that you have seen on the trail?

Although it was scary at the time, my encounter with a mountain lion seems funny in retrospect. Also, encountering skinny dippers while on a trail run. Oh, and Jeff Rowe’s shorts at Fourmidable a few years back.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not running?

I enjoy hanging out with my wife, Annie, and our two daughters, Maddie (10) and Maisie (7). I also enjoy playing music. I play mandolin in a local acoustic swing group called Hot Club Faux Gitane.

Who are your running heroes?

My running heroes and those who inspire me are the back of the pack runners who never give up. They’re often on their feet considerably longer that the front-runners and cross the finish line after many others have gone home. That kind of perseverance is badass!

Describe the moment you realized you were a “runner”.

For a long time I was embarrassed to be seen running because I felt like an imposter…I didn’t feel like a runner.  I suppose I still feel that way to some extent.

What are your goals?

In terms of running goals, I’d love to run a 100-miler some time.

What’s your favorite beer (or other drink if you don’t drink beer)?

I no longer drink beer…I have other ways to relax 😉
