“Colorado” Tim Unrath

What got you out running/walking for the first time?

I spent the better part of my twenties in a bar (I know most people would think I have never touched a drop of alcohol).  I also spent a good portion of my twenties married to a terrific woman who I couldn’t stand to be around. Enough said?

What’s a song that helps pick up your pace?

“Death Trip” – The Yonder Mountain String Band version.  I bet I had that song running in my head for 75 miles at Javelina.

What is the race medal you are most proud of and why?

Chautauqua Ultras 2013 – 50 Mile – It was my first 50 Mile race, it was pouring down rain for all 7 hours.  Most of the course was ankle to shin deep in water. And I won.

What is your dream race or location for a run?

I’ve lotteried OUT of HURT 100 and Western States 100 this year.  I’d like to add not getting into Hard Rock, UTMB and Leadville to my list in near the future.  My buddy Crazy Chris (ask Peter and Jen about him) runs a 200M by himself on the Colorado Trail every year in October, I think i’d like to join him one year and that would be my dream run.

What is your favorite trail to run?

While I was in California I spent a lot of time on the Arnold Rim Trail and while training for Javelina, the trails in the Red Hills.  They will hold a special place in my heart forever. In Boulder, I live three blocks from Mt Sanitas. It’s not the biggest mountain in Colorado, but I have found doing a triple Sanitas summit is the best way to clear my mind. There’s also a spot off of I-70 in the middle of nowhere Utah where I’ve pulled off and just run in the desert for hours with no trails, no markers and lots of cows to scare or be scared by.

What’s your favorite race distance?

The Dusty Bottoms Ultra Beer Mile… duh!

What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you or that you have seen on the trail?

I always laugh when I have to bury a trail poop!  Last weekend I was running in the Gore Range in Colorado and a couple of New Yorkers asked me if there were any bears in the area.  I told them no, they were all hibernating. Then about a mile later I ran square into two moose in the middle of the trail. I forgot to warn them about moose!

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not running?

I’m a ski bum, a voracious reader, and a beer enthusiast. I also like to write poetry about the trails after I’m done running. Mostly haiku.

Who are your running heroes? Who inspires you?

Every single person I’ve ever run with has inspired me in some form or fashion. Runners have the best life stories.  Also Jenn Shelton, no big deal.

Describe the moment you realized you were a “runner”.

I’m not sure it’s happened.  I’m still the guy that hears about a race on a Thursday night after drinking beers at Fuzio’s and emails a race director for entry on Saturday morning without having any real training under my belt.  I’m also still the guy who struggles to get out of bed to jog before sun comes up and hopes no one sees him. I got bloody nipples at a 50k once, does that count?

What are your goals?

When I tell people I am an ultra runner I’d like for them to not ask “have you run Leadville?” Or “there’s this race in Tennessee that sounds cool, have you ever heard of it?” Near term, I’ll requalify for Western States and I’d like to get a 200 under my belt.  Anyone want to run VT100 this year?

What’s your favorite beer (or other drink if you don’t drink beer)?

One favorite beer?!  How about a few… Pliney the Elder, Sip of Sunshine, Heady Topper, Juicy Bits, Montucky Cold Snacks.
